Dominique de Villepin is a French diplomat and politician, best known for serving as Prime Minister of France from March 2005 to May 2007. Trained in the grandes écoles and coming from a diplomatic background, he became a close collaborator of Jacques Chirac and a representative figure of the administrative elite that emerges from the École Nationale d'Administration. Internationally, he became prominent for publicly opposing the 2003 invasion of Iraq while serving as Minister of Foreign Affairs, a speech he delivered to the United Nations Security Council that shaped his public image. Having not held elected office, Villepin was often cited as an example of bureaucratic power in French politics. The author of several essays and books, including studies on Napoleon—a subject he admires and on which he has received recognition—he maintained a steady intellectual activity alongside his political career. His legacy combines diplomatic work, positions on French foreign policy and a body of writing that contributed to debates on power, history and Europe.
