Don Winslow is an American novelist widely known for his crime and mystery fiction, notably the Cartel Trilogy (The Power of the Dog, The Cartel, The Border), as well as high-profile titles such as Savages and The Force. Often set in California and along borderlands, his work examines networks of corruption, drug trafficking, and the human toll of violence, blending historical research with experience in private investigations.
Trained in African history with a master’s degree in military history, Winslow worked as a State Department analyst and as a private investigator before committing full-time to writing. That background contributes to the procedural realism and geopolitical detail that characterize his plots and complex characters, such as DEA agent Art Keller.
His books have won awards and earned international critical recognition — including the Ian Fleming Steel Dagger and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize — and have attracted Hollywood interest: Savages and several other projects have had film and television rights acquired. In recent years he released City on Fire and, after a brief hiatus for political activism, returned with The Final Score.
Beyond fiction, Winslow takes part in public debates on drug policy, gun control, and criminal justice reform, positions that inform and interact with the central themes of his work.
