Claudia of France, known as Claudia of Valois, was a French princess who became Duchess Consort of Lorraine by marriage in the 16th century. The daughter of Henry II and Catherine de’ Medici, she served as a diplomatic pawn amid dynastic arrangements between the French crown and the duchy of Lorraine; in 1559 she married Charles III in a union intended to seal the peace following the Treaty of Cateau‑Cambrésis. Despite health problems in childhood, she maintained a secure place at court and was regarded as sympathetic to the monarchy’s interests in Lorraine.
Her marriage to Charles III has been described as affectionate and politically significant: Claudia acted as a mediator and link between the royal family and the Lorraine court, receiving visits and attention from Catherine de’ Medici. She took part in key events of the reign, such as the wedding of Margaret of Valois, and the tensions surrounding the wars of religion.
Mother of nine children, including Henry II and Christine of Lorraine, she left an important dynastic legacy for Lorraine and several European houses. She died in 1575 in childbirth at the age of 27, an event that prompted mourning and reinforced the image of a duchess esteemed by subjects and relatives.
