Duque de Brittany (1707) Louis

Photo: Reproduction

Louis de France, Duke of Brittany (1707–1712), was a member of the early 18th-century French royal family and a great-grandson of Louis XIV. The son of Louis, Duke of Burgundy, and Maria Adelaide of Savoy, he received the title Duke of Brittany at birth and bore a coat of arms combining the symbols of France and Brittany. Raised under the supervision of the Duchess of Ventadour, he was in the direct line of succession by virtue of his place in the family. When his father died on 18 February 1712, he became the heir apparent to the French throne. His short life ended just three weeks later, when he died of measles—the same epidemic that claimed his parents. Louis’s premature death altered the dynastic succession: his younger brother, Louis, Duke of Anjou, became Dauphin and later reigned as Louis XV. The Duke of Brittany’s brief life is remembered primarily for its impact on the Bourbon line of succession and for the political and dynastic consequences that followed the deaths in the royal family during that epidemic.
