Afonso de Orléans e Borbón, fifth Duke of Galliera, was an infante of Franco‑Spanish dynastic origin who became notable as one of the pioneering and leading Spanish military aviators in the early twentieth century. Trained as a military officer in Toledo and as a pilot in France, he rose to prominence in the first decades of the century by holding command positions in Spanish aviation and by leading operations such as the Alhucemas Landing (1925). Exiled in London after the proclamation of the Second Republic in 1931, he returned in 1937 to join the Nationalist air force during the Civil War. After the conflict he was promoted to divisional general and headed the Second Air Region, later being appointed brigadier general. In 1945 he resigned his command of the Strait Region in support of a manifesto calling for monarchical restoration, a move that ended his active Army career, although he continued to fly. A direct descendant of French and Spanish royal branches, Afonso received aristocratic honors at birth and maintained European ties through marriage to Princess Beatrice of Saxe‑Coburg‑Gotha. His name endures in aviation preservation efforts, such as the Infante de Orléans Foundation.
