Ferdinando Maria Alberto Amedeo Filiberto Vincenzo, known as the Duke of Genoa, was a member of the House of Savoy and a military figure of the Kingdom of Sardinia during the nineteenth‑century Italian wars of independence. The second son of King Charles Albert, he received the duchy in 1831 and served with distinction as a divisional commander in the 1848–1849 campaigns, during which he was awarded a decoration for military valour. After peace was restored, he held the post of general commander of the artillery, focusing on modernization and the reorganization of the forces. In June 1848 he was briefly proclaimed King of Sicily by a secessionist government but abdicated to avoid creating a conflict with the legitimate sovereign of the Two Sicilies, showing a conciliatory political stance amid the peninsula’s fragmentation. He married Princess Maria Isabel of Saxony in 1850; they had two children, including Thomas, who succeeded him in the duchy, and a daughter, Margaret, who later became Queen Consort of Italy. Appointed to an auxiliary command in the Crimean War, he was unable to assume the post due to health problems and died young; he was interred in the royal crypt of the Basilica of Superga.
