Louis Charles Philippe Raphael d’Orléans, Duke of Nemours (1814–1896), was a prince of the House of Orléans and a military and political figure of nineteenth‑century France. The son of King Louis‑Philippe I, he began a military career early—made a colonel at twelve—and took part in expeditions during the Belgian campaigns and in Algeria, where he commanded operations around Constantine. He carried out several courtesy missions to European monarchies and in 1840 married Princess Victoria of Saxe‑Coburg‑Koháry, forging significant dynastic ties. During the Revolution of 1848 he helped defend the Tuileries and fled into exile in England, settling with his family at Claremont. While in exile he worked toward reconciliation between branches of the Bourbon dynasty, advocating acceptance of the tricolor and a constitutional regime as the route to monarchical restoration, but he did not secure consensus. Restored to his political rights in 1871, he regained his military rank and presided over the Red Cross until 1881. His career combined military service, efforts at dynastic conciliation, and a discreet presence in French public life; he died at Versailles and was buried in the Royal Chapel of Dreux.
