Duchess Charlotte Georgine of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was a member of the House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and, by marriage, Duchess of Saxe-Hildburghausen. Born at the Hanoverian court, she belonged to a highly prominent family whose daughters were celebrated for their beauty and social influence at the end of the 18th century. She married young to Duke Frederick in an unhappy union marked by personal differences and the duchy’s financial difficulties. As a public figure, Charlotte became known for her cultural patronage: she turned the court into a center of intellectual and artistic activity—a “little Weimar”—drawing musicians, painters and writers, among them Jean Paul. She provided tangible support for the arts and relaxed court protocols, encouraging greater cultural freedom. She also carried out philanthropic work, directing a significant portion of her income to the poor, to pensioners and to vocational training. After the death of her sister she erected a memorial in Hildburghausen in her honor. Her local legacy remains associated with the cultural flowering and the social initiatives that marked the principality during that period.
