Edward H. White II was an American astronaut and military pilot, best known for performing the first American spacewalk. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point with a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering, he served as a pilot and test pilot in the USAF, accruing about 3,000 flight hours and rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel. In September 1962 he was selected as a member of NASA’s second astronaut group. White flew on Gemini 4 with James McDivitt; on June 3, 1965 he conducted the extravehicular activity that made him a key figure in the era of crewed missions, helping establish procedures and techniques for spacewalks. He was later assigned to the inaugural mission of the Apollo program aboard AS-204, known as Apollo 1. In January 1967, White died in the command module fire during a ground test at the Kennedy Space Center; Virgil Grissom and Roger Chaffee also perished in the accident. The tragedy exposed design and procedural flaws, prompting substantial safety, materials, and systems changes to the Apollo capsules and delaying the program’s missions. Posthumous recognition of White includes honors in aviation and the space program: induction into halls of fame, medals, numerous sites named after him, and references in artifacts and culture that preserve his legacy in the history of space exploration.
