Eddie Constantine, born Edward Israël Constantinowsky, was an American singer and actor who built his career primarily in Europe, becoming a notable figure in French cinema of the 1950s and 1960s. Initially focused on music, he made his mark in Parisian cabarets and recorded chansons; his voice and stage presence led him into acting while he retained his identity as a singer. His breakout came with the role of secret agent Lemmy Caution in film adaptations of Peter Cheyney’s crime series, beginning with La Môme vert-de-gris (1953). Constantine described the character as a “James Bond before James Bond,” and the part cemented his image as a seductive, straightforward hero featured in several popular, light-entertainment films. In the second half of his career he sought artistic renewal, appearing in avant-garde works such as Jean-Luc Godard’s Alphaville (1965) and collaborating with critically important European directors including Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Lars von Trier. He also published novels and, late in life, began working more frequently in Germany. His legacy is that of a mediator of cultures: an American artist who became part of the European scene, helped shape the mythology of the popular film hero, and remained a cult figure for filmmakers and cinephiles.
