Edgar Winter is an American multi-instrumentalist whose career has shown a versatile style, working across rock, blues, jazz and pop. A singer and performer on keyboards, alto saxophone and percussion, he rose to prominence in the 1970s leading the Edgar Winter Group, whose repertoire includes the rock classics “Frankenstein” and “Free Ride,” songs that secured his presence on radio and in classic rock culture. His album They Only Come Out at Night (1972) reached No. 3 on the Billboard chart and stayed on the listings for 80 weeks, becoming a double-platinum record.
Earlier, Winter had already attracted attention with his debut album Entrance (1970) and with projects such as Edgar Winter’s White Trash, which combined musicians from Texas and Louisiana and pointed to his taste for stylistic fusions. In addition to his own albums, he worked extensively as a session musician, collaborating with artists such as Tina Turner, Meat Loaf, Dan Hartman and David Lee Roth.
An innovator on stage, Winter developed a keyboard strap that allows him mobility during energetic performances. His music has also had broad use in media, appearing in films and series and eventually being sampled in contemporary works, which has helped sustain his musical legacy.
