Edmond Halley was one of the most versatile British scientists of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, working as an astronomer, mathematician and geophysicist. He became renowned for demonstrating the periodicity of the comet that now bears his name, predicting its return and applying orbital calculation methods that influenced cometary astronomy. As Savilian Professor of Geometry at Oxford and later as Astronomer Royal, he produced catalogs of the southern sky, measured proper motions of stars and worked on planetary transits to estimate the distance from the Earth to the Sun. Halley was a key figure in the publication of Isaac Newton’s Principia: he encouraged Newton to present the calculations on gravitation and financed the book’s edition, thus helping to spread the laws of mechanics. He also investigated Earth’s magnetism, mapped magnetic variations and explained aspects of the aurora borealis, in addition to relating barometric pressure to altitude. Outside astronomy, he conducted pioneering studies in demography and actuarial science, publishing a life table based on data from Breslau. His legacy is wide-ranging: advances in celestial mechanics, star mapping and magnetism, and a decisive role in consolidating modern science in the Newtonian era.
