Edward Wadie Said was a Palestinian‑American scholar, literary critic, and public intellectual who became known as a professor of Comparative Literature at Columbia University. A central figure in the establishment of postcolonial studies, he changed critical practices by proposing new readings of the relations between culture and power. His book Orientalism (1978) became a standard reference by showing how Western representations of the “Orient” served colonial interests and shaped academic knowledge and cultural policies.

Throughout his career, Said combined literary theory, cultural criticism, and political engagement, producing works such as Culture and Imperialism (1993) and numerous essays that problematize cultural archives and imperial narratives. Influenced by thinkers such as Gramsci, Fanon, and Foucault, he linked textual analysis and historical context to reveal how the humanistic disciplines reproduce relations of domination.

An activist for Palestinian national rights, he served on the Palestinian National Council and argued for various political solutions over time, while remaining critical of agreements and the status quo. His legacy endures both in the scholarly methods of postcolonial studies and in public debates about culture, politics, and memory.
