Edwin Powell Hubble was an American astronomer whose work transformed extragalactic astronomy and observational cosmology in the 20th century. Using observations made at the Mount Wilson Observatory, Hubble showed that many “nebulae” were in fact independent galaxies beyond the Milky Way, proving the existence of extragalactic stellar systems and dramatically expanding the known scale of the universe.

By applying the period–luminosity relation of Cepheid variables, Hubble measured distances to nearby galaxies — a result that confirmed that Andromeda and other “nebulae” lay outside our galaxy. In subsequent studies he assembled evidence that galaxies’ recessional velocities increase with distance, a relation that became a pillar of modern cosmology (the Hubble–Lemaître law) and implies an expanding universe.

Beyond his scientific contributions, Hubble worked on instrumentation and took part in applied research efforts during World War II, receiving honors for his service. His scientific legacy remains alive: his name became synonymous with space observation through the telescope that brought him public renown, a lasting symbol of advances in understanding the cosmos.
