Eelco Nicolaas van Kleffens was a Dutch jurist, politician and diplomat whose career became prominent during and after World War II. With a doctorate in law from Leiden University, he worked in the Secretariat of the League of Nations and at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, gaining technical and administrative experience in international relations. In 1939 he became Minister of Foreign Affairs shortly before the outbreak of the war, joining the Dutch government in exile during the occupation. After the conflict he retained an important diplomatic role: he served as ambassador to the United States (from 1947) and to Portugal (from 1950). In the 1950s he held senior multilateral positions, including the presidency of the United Nations General Assembly in 1954, and posts with NATO and the OECD (1956–1958). From 1958 to 1967 he served at the European Coal and Steel Community, contributing to European economic integration. He retired to Portugal at the end of his diplomatic career, where he lived until his death in 1983. His legacy includes strengthening Dutch foreign relations in the postwar period and participation in emerging multilateral organizations.
