Christian I of Saxony was Elector of Saxony and a member of the House of Wettin, ruling from 1586 until his death in 1591. According to the sources he was the sixth son, but the second surviving son of Elector Augustus I, and succeeded after the death of his elder brother. Contemporary accounts describe him as gifted but poorly educated, and he showed limited interest in state affairs upon taking power.
On the religious front, Christian sought to ease internal theological conflicts: already co-regent in 1585, he supported a law against doctrinal disputes and, in 1587, brought the preacher Johann Salmuth to court, who introduced liturgical reforms such as the abolition of exorcism in baptism. Those initiatives brought the court closer to Calvinist tendencies and met resistance, including from his wife, Sophia of Brandenburg.
The elector’s policy was strongly influenced by his chancellor, Nikolaus Krell, who reduced the role of the Privy Council, while Christian favored festivals, hunting and fortification works — among them expansions at Königstein and the transformation of the Stallhof into a tournament venue. During his reign the first cadastral survey of the electorate was begun, a cartographic project continued until 1633.
He died in 1591 at the age of 30, leaving the succession to his minor son and a legacy marked by moderate religious reforms, administrative centralization and patronage of court ceremonies.
