Elizabeth Cady Stanton was an American writer and activist and a central figure in the nineteenth-century women’s rights movement. She led the organization of the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848 and was the principal author of the Declaration of Sentiments, the document that placed female suffrage at the center of the women’s rights agenda in the United States. Also active in abolitionism, Stanton formed a lasting partnership with Susan B. Anthony that drove campaigns such as the Loyal League of Women during the Civil War, responsible for one of the largest petitions of the period. Together they founded the newspaper The Revolution and organized the American Equal Rights Association, seeking equal rights for women and African Americans. Her uncompromising defense of women’s suffrage provoked controversy, including opposition to the manner in which the Fifteenth Amendment was adopted and statements with elitist and racial overtones that fractured the movement. Stanton presided over the National Woman Suffrage Association and later held a symbolic position in the merger that created the National American Woman Suffrage Association. A prolific intellectual producer, she authored the early volumes of History of Woman Suffrage and The Woman’s Bible, works that documented, criticized, and sought to reinterpret religious and historical traditions that marginalized women. Her legacy remains tied to the institutionalization and memory of women’s suffrage in the U.S.
