Elizabeth Jordan Carr became known as the first baby born in the United States via in vitro fertilization (IVF) and the 15th in the world. The birth took place in Norfolk, Virginia, in a procedure carried out at Eastern Virginia Medical School by Howard and Georgeanna Seegar Jones, with delivery performed by Dr. Mason Andrews. Her arrival marked a milestone in the history of assisted reproduction in the country, opening the way for techniques now widely used. The daughter of Judith and Roger Carr, her family history included reproductive difficulties that led to her mother having her fallopian tubes removed after successive ectopic pregnancies, providing the context for choosing IVF treatment. Elizabeth studied at Simmons College in Boston and later started a family: in 2010 she gave birth to Trevor James Comeau, conceived without the use of reproductive technologies.
