Elizabeth Stuart was an English princess, the second daughter of Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria of France. She grew up amid war and dynastic struggle: during the English Civil War she was placed under Parliament’s care from childhood, living practically as a prisoner in St James’s Palace and in the houses of nobles appointed by parliamentary commissioners. Despite her short life, she was notable for an education advanced for her age — she mastered several classical and modern languages and drew the attention of contemporary intellectuals — and for her religious sensitivity and resolute character. She kept a close bond with her father and authored moving accounts of their final meeting on the eve of his execution, testimonies preserved in contemporary memoirs. Her fragile health, later identified as rickets, contrasted with a presence and courage that earned her recognition among diplomats and courtiers. Her premature death in 1650 cut short a life that had been central to key political and family episodes during the collapse of the Stuart monarchy.
