Erling Kagge is a Norwegian explorer whose career spans polar expeditions, publishing and cultural work. He became known as the first person to complete the historic triad — the North Pole, the South Pole and the summit of Everest — all reached on foot; his crossings to the North Pole (1990, with Børge Ousland) and to the South Pole (1992–1993, solo and unsupported) marked the era of the great final explorations of the late 20th century.

Trained in law, Kagge worked as a lawyer before deepening his studies in philosophy at Cambridge. In 1996 he founded the publishing house Kagge Forlag, which grew and absorbed one of Norway’s oldest publishing houses, becoming a major producer of non-fiction in Norway until its sale in 2021.

Author of several books on exploration, philosophy and art — translated into dozens of languages — he has also written for international publications and received wide attention from the cultural press. His work addresses silence, walking and the experience of collecting, themes that broadened his recognition beyond the world of expeditions.

Actively involved with contemporary art, he is a collector whose exhibitions have been shown in major European museums. More recently he took part in assessments of space exploration for the European Space Agency, reflecting a public role that combines adventure, thought and cultural curatorship.
