Estelle Parsons is an American actress whose career spans theatre, film and television. A graduate of Connecticut College, she shifted from music to acting and established herself on New York stages in the 1960s, winning Off‑Broadway awards and earning Tony nominations for several dramatic theatre roles. In 2004 she was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame. In film, she rose to international prominence by winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Bonnie and Clyde (1967) and receiving a second nomination for Rachel, Rachel (1968); her filmography also includes titles such as Watermelon Man, I Never Sang for My Father and Dick Tracy. Her work in the 1970s and 1980s combined acting and theatre directing, and she was the first woman invited to direct at the New York Shakespeare Festival. On television she became well known as Beverly Harris on the series Roseanne and its spin‑off The Conners, while appearing in a wide range of productions over several decades. She also held artistic leadership roles, serving as artistic director of the Actors Studio (1998–2003), and has maintained a lasting influence on contemporary American theatre.
