Franz von Papen was a conservative Prussian politician and diplomat whose career spanned critical moments of the Weimar Republic and the Nazi era. Trained as an officer and a member of the Catholic Westphalian aristocracy, he served with distinction on the General Staff and as a military attaché in Mexico and the United States, where he took part in covert operations during World War I. His career combined diplomatic service with a propensity for political intrigue. Appointed chancellor in 1932 by Paul von Hindenburg, he ruled by presidential decree and negotiated the end of reparations at the Lausanne Conference. He also led the coup against Prussia’s Social Democratic government (Preußenschlag). Unable to secure parliamentary support, he was replaced by von Schleicher. Convinced he could control Adolf Hitler, Papen persuaded Hindenburg to appoint Hitler chancellor in 1933 and accepted the post of vice‑chancellor; he was soon marginalized by the Nazis and left government after the Night of the Long Knives. He later served as ambassador in Vienna and Ankara and joined the Nazi Party in 1938. After the war he was tried at Nuremberg and acquitted by the International Military Tribunal, but was found a principal offender by a denazification court in West Germany and sentenced, then released on appeal a few years later. He published his memoirs in the 1950s.
