Frederick Grant Banting was a Canadian physician and researcher recognized for his decisive role in the discovery of insulin. A graduate of the University of Toronto, he served as a military doctor in World War I and built an academic career as a professor and investigator, focusing primarily on the study of the pancreas and the causes of diabetes. In collaboration with Charles Best and with the support of J.B. Collip and J.J.R. Macleod, Banting took part in developing methods to extract insulin and enable its therapeutic use; the first clinical application occurred in 1922.
For that achievement, Banting and Macleod received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1923, and he became a central figure in Canadian medicine, holding academic posts and founding the institute that bears his name. Over the course of his career he broadened his research to topics such as silicosis, cancer and physiological problems of aviation.
During World War II he served as a major in the medical corps and led research on the difficulties faced by pilots, contributing to practical advances such as the development of anti-gravity suits. Banting died in 1941 in an air crash; his legacy endures in diabetes treatment and in the research institutions he helped create.
