Frederick Peel was a British Liberal politician and a prominent commissioner in the railway sector. The son of Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel, he studied law at Cambridge and entered Parliament in 1849, representing constituencies including Leominster and Bury during the 1850s and 1860s. In government he held important junior posts, serving as an under-secretary in military and colonial departments and later as Financial Secretary to the Treasury from 1860 to 1865. In 1857 he was appointed to the Privy Council in recognition of his public service. His principal legacy lies in transport regulation: he was appointed a commissioner in the creation of the Railway and Canal Commission in 1873, chaired the body until its reform in 1888 and remained a member until his death. He was made a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1869. Peel is remembered for shifting from ministerial politics to regulatory administration, playing a long-lasting role in overseeing transport infrastructure during Britain’s railway expansion.
