Fritz Albert Lipmann was a German-born biochemist who worked in the United States, best known for co-discovering coenzyme A in 1945. His identification of coenzyme A and the elucidation of its role in intermediary metabolism earned him half of the 1953 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, an honor he shared with Hans Adolf Krebs. Throughout his career, Lipmann worked at prominent institutions including Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School and later Rockefeller University, where he conducted foundational research on bioenergetics and metabolic pathways. In 1966 he also received the National Medal of Science, further establishing his influence on modern biochemistry. Beyond his central discovery, he introduced notations and concepts concerning high-energy phosphate bonds—such as the use of the specific dash (~) to denote bond energy in ATP—and investigated variants of coenzyme A, including pantethine. His legacy lies in advancing understanding of cellular energy generation and utilization, with lasting impact on biochemistry and biomedicine.
