Gamal Abdel Nasser was an Egyptian military officer and statesman who led the country’s transformation after the monarchy fell in 1952 and served as president from 1954 to 1970. Trained at the Military Academy, he emerged as one of the leaders of the Free Officers Movement, which aimed to end King Farouk’s rule and implement sweeping changes in national policy. In power, Nasser pursued a nationalist and pan-Arab agenda, seeking greater independence from colonial powers. His most consequential act was the nationalization of the Suez Canal in 1956, which triggered the international crisis known as the Suez War and elevated his standing among countries of the so‑called Third World. During his government there was also a brief political union with Syria in the form of the United Arab Republic. However, he suffered setbacks: defeat in the 1967 Six-Day War severely weakened Egypt’s military capability and damaged his regime’s regional prestige. Nasser remains a central figure of twentieth-century Arab nationalism, remembered both for promoting modernization and asserting Egyptian sovereignty and for the military and political tensions that marked his time in power.
