Gene Clark (Harold Eugene Clark) was a singer-songwriter and one of the founding members of the folk-rock band The Byrds, recognized as the principal writer of much of the group's early repertoire. Between mid-1964 and early 1966 he wrote classics such as "I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better," "Eight Miles High," and "Set You Free This Time," songs that helped define the band's innovative sound and influenced the development of psychedelic rock and country rock. After leaving The Byrds, Clark pursued a solo career and maintained important collaborations, notably with Doug Dillard in the Dillard & Clark project; their album The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark is now regarded as a landmark of country rock and progressive bluegrass. Despite critical talent, his work often met with modest commercial success. Clark's originality—his tenor voice, melodic sensitivity, and songwriting talent—placed him at the forefront of various subgenres, anticipating trends in alternative rock and contemporary country music. In 1991 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Byrds, a recognition of his legacy in American popular music.
