Georg Wilhelm von Brandenburg was a prince of the House of Hohenzollern who ruled as margrave of Brandenburg and duke in Prussia from 1619 until his death in 1640. A son of the elector John Sigismund and Anna of Prussia, he received a university education and held administrative posts before succeeding his father. He married Elisabeth-Charlotte of the Palatinate, a match that placed him at the center of the period’s Protestant dynastic networks.
During the Thirty Years’ War his conduct was marked by indecision and by power struggles between advisers who favored the emperor and those who favored Sweden. Pressed by the king of Sweden, he eventually entered the conflict on the side of the Protestant states, but he suffered political and military setbacks, partly owing to rivalry among his ministers and to his inability to mobilize sufficient forces.
In the 1630s Brandenburg was devastated by plunder, epidemics, and famine; in 1638 Georg Wilhelm fled to East Prussia, where he died in relative exile and lacking resources. His reign is remembered for the weakening of the margraviate during the war; the restoration and rebuilding of the state came under his son Frederick William, the “Great Elector.”
