Georg Friedrich Karl Wittig was a German organic chemist whose work transformed twentieth‑century organic synthesis. He is best known for the Wittig reaction, developed from the use of phosphorus derivatives (phosphorus ylides or phosphonium carbanions) to convert aldehydes and ketones into alkenes, a technique that became an essential tool for constructing double bonds in complex molecules.
His academic and research career brought international recognition: in 1979 he received, jointly with Herbert C. Brown, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for advances in the use of phosphorus and boron compounds in organic synthesis. In addition to the reaction that bears his name, Wittig published studies on stereochemistry and on mechanisms involving atom–ligand complexes, contributing to the understanding of preparative reactions.
Wittig’s influence extends to pharmaceutical chemistry and natural product synthesis, where his methods enabled more direct and selective routes to functionalized alkenes. His legacy remains active in academic and industrial laboratories that adopt his reactions as standard procedures.
