George Redburn Young was a Scottish-born musician, songwriter and producer who made his life and career in Australia, shaping Australian rock from the 1960s onward. He rose to prominence as the guitarist and a principal songwriter of The Easybeats, co-writing international hits such as "Friday on My Mind." After the group's breakup he formed a successful songwriting and production partnership with Harry Vanda that worked under several names, including Flash and the Pan. Vanda & Young became known for writing and producing songs for other artists as well as for releasing their own material. George also led projects such as Marcus Hook Roll Band, which involved his brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. His behind-the-scenes work was decisive for the Australian rock scene, combining a gift for catchy songs with studio production expertise. In the hard rock field, Young co-produced AC/DC’s early albums and briefly played bass in the band, helping shape the sound of the group founded by his brothers. Among the best-known songs of his career, besides "Friday on My Mind," are compositions like "Love Is in the Air" and "Good Times." His legacy endures in the influence he had on Australian artists and bands and in the continued presence of his songs in the international repertoire, through covers and compositions that defined generations.
