Helmut Newton (born Helmut Neustädter) was a German fashion photographer, later naturalized Australian, whose career deeply influenced twentieth-century editorial aesthetics. Trained in Berlin’s photographic scene, he worked with Yva before fleeing the Nazi regime; he settled in Australia, where he opened his own studio and served in the army during World War II.
Over the following decades he lived and worked in cities such as London and Paris, collaborating with Vogue and establishing a style noted for its eroticism, theatrical compositions, and fetishistic and sadomasochistic references. In the 1980s he achieved even greater prominence with the "Big Nudes" series, which reaffirmed his presence in major publications and international exhibitions.
Author of several photography books, his work inspired both admiration for its technique and visual impact and debates about representation and power in the image. He spent his later years between Monte Carlo and Los Angeles and died in 2004; his legacy lives on in collections, publications, and the foundation that preserves his work.
