Helmut Heinrich Waldemar Schmidt was a prominent German politician of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) who served as Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1974 to 1982. Before that he held major ministerial posts, including Defense, Economics and Finance, and played a decisive role in managing the Hamburg floods and in modernizing that city's administration. On the international stage, Schmidt continued the Ostpolitik begun by Willy Brandt, balancing rapprochement with the Soviet Union and Eastern bloc countries while maintaining West Germany’s alignment with its Western and European partners. He was also notable for his partnership with French President Valéry Giscard d’Estaing on European policy and for controversial defense decisions such as accepting the deployment of U.S. missiles and supporting the stationing of Pershing missiles in response to Soviet SS‑20s. Domestically, his government confronted urban terrorism, energy crises and a severe recession after the oil shocks of the 1970s, requiring economic and security measures that split political alliances and contributed to the collapse of the coalition in 1982. After leaving the Chancellorship he remained a member of the Bundestag until 1986 and turned to journalism and writing, serving as co‑editor of the weekly Die Zeit and publishing several books, leaving a legacy as a pragmatic statesman who influenced postwar European politics.
