Henny Porten was a German actress and producer, recognized as the first major film star in Germany during the silent era. She appeared in more than 170 films between 1906 and 1955, becoming a central figure in the growth of the German film industry by portraying everyday characters that reflected traditional values and social conflicts. Born into a family connected to theater and film, Porten worked early on with producers such as Oskar Messter and with notable directors of the period — including Ernst Lubitsch, Ewald André Dupont and Georg Wilhelm Pabst — achieving successes such as The Love of a Blind Woman, Anna Boleyn and Kohlhiesels Töchter. In 1919 she founded her own production company, which later entered into a partnership with Carl Froelich’s firm. She made her sound-film debut in 1930, but her career suffered under Nazi persecution after she refused to divorce her husband of Jewish origin; nonetheless she continued to make films during the Nazi era and, after World War II, worked in DEFA productions. Her public image was that of a placid, comforting performer, appreciated by the popular audiences of her time. Awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1960, Henny Porten left a legacy as a pioneer of German cinema and as the emblematic popular star of the silent period.
