Henri-François-Joseph de Régnier was a French symbolist poet, considered one of the major voices in French literature at the beginning of the twentieth century. Trained in law in Paris, he made his literary debut in 1885 by publishing verses in Parisian journals, aligning himself with the symbolist movement while retaining elements of the Parnassian tradition. A disciple of Stéphane Mallarmé, Régnier cultivated a suggestive and refined style, assimilating innovations from contemporaries such as Jean Moréas and Gustave Kahn. His poetic output includes notable volumes such as Lendemains (1885), Poèmes anciens et romanesques (1890), Les Jeux rustiques et divins (1890), Les Médailles d'argile (1900) and La Cité des eaux (1903). In addition to poetry, he wrote novels and short stories in a realist mode, including La Canne de jaspe, La Double maîtresse, Les Vacances d'un jeune homme sage and Les Amants singuliers. He married Marie de Heredia (literary pseudonym Gérard d'Houville), also a writer and the daughter of the poet José María de Heredia. Régnier's work influenced the French literary scene through its blend of classicism and symbolism; he died in 1936 and is buried in Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
