Henri Langlois was a French film archivist and preservationist, a central figure in the history of twentieth-century film heritage. A co-founder of the Cinémathèque Française in 1936, Langlois grew a small initial collection into tens of thousands of films and related objects — cameras, projection equipment, costumes and programs — playing a decisive role in safeguarding works at risk, especially during and after World War II. His programming of screenings in Paris and his romantic approach to cinema directly influenced the generation of critics and filmmakers of the Nouvelle Vague, such as Truffaut and Godard, who regarded him as a mentor and catalyst for new aesthetic ideas. Controversial for unorthodox methods of storage and cataloguing, Langlois faced public crises, most notably the 1968 episode when he was briefly dismissed and then reinstated after widespread cultural mobilization. Acknowledged internationally, he was a co-founder of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) and received an honorary Oscar in 1974 for his dedication to film preservation. His legacy endures in the institutionalization of film preservation and in the collective memory of cinema as art and cultural heritage.
