Henri Troyat (born Levon Aslani Thorosian/Lev Aslanovich Tarasov) was a French writer, essayist, novelist and historian of Armenian origin whose work frequently explored the roots and upheavals of Russia. Exiled with his family after the 1917 Revolution, he settled in Paris, earned a law degree and built a prolific literary career: he published more than one hundred works, including novels, plays and biographies.
His singular output includes award‑winning novels—he won the Prix Goncourt in 1938 for L’Araignée—and sustained recognition for bestsellers such as La neige en deuil, which was adapted for film in 1956. Troyat also made his mark as a biographer of Russian and imperial figures—Chekhov, Catherine the Great, Rasputin, Ivan IV and Tolstoy—helping introduce Russian history to a Francophone readership.
He was elected to the Académie française in 1959, where he held seat no. 28 until his death, leaving a legacy as a bridge between two cultures and as an author of wide thematic range. His work remains a reference for the literary and historical understanding of nineteenth‑century Russia and the Russian exile of the twentieth century.
