Henry Valentine Miller was an American writer whose work blends autobiography and fiction, often featuring philosophical digressions and explicit accounts that led to the censorship of several of his books. He became famous for the trilogy Sexus, Plexus, Nexus — which he grouped as "The Crucified One Incarnate" — and for titles such as Tropic of Cancer and Big Sur and the Oranges of Hieronymus Bosch. His writing broadened the debate on sexuality and literary freedom in the United States and in several countries where his books were banned.
Active in Paris from the late 1920s until the start of World War II, Miller lived in precarious circumstances and relied on the support of friends and partners, notably Anaïs Nin, who helped publish the first edition of Tropic of Cancer. In subsequent years he returned to the U.S., settled for long periods in Big Sur, and built a prolific career.
Beyond erotic imagery, his output includes travel books and essays on art and literature, such as Colossus of Marussia and studies on Rimbaud. Miller’s legacy lies both in challenging moral restrictions and in influencing generations of writers interested in the intersection of personal experience and literary invention.
