John Scofield is an American guitarist and composer whose work has ranged across jazz, jazz fusion, funk, blues, soul, and rock. He came to prominence as a member of Miles Davis’s band in the early 1980s and has since built a prolific career as a leader and collaborator, alternating between trios, quartets, and larger ensembles. His discography includes notable albums such as Blue Matter, Still Warm, Überjam, and A Go Go, as well as orchestral projects like Scorched, created in partnership with composer Mark-Anthony Turnage.
Scofield has recorded and toured with leading jazz artists — including Joe Lovano, Steve Swallow, Bill Stewart, Charlie Haden, and Jack DeJohnette — and has crossed into nontraditional scenes, working with artists such as Medeski Martin & Wood, Mavis Staples, and John Mayer. His style is recognized for blending sophisticated improvisation with grooves influenced by funk and soul music.
A three-time Grammy winner and a recipient of France’s Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, Scofield also received an honorary doctorate from the Berklee College of Music. In addition to recording and touring, he has served as an adjunct professor at New York University and was the subject of the documentary Inside Scofield (2022). He is regarded as a versatile guitarist who expanded the boundaries of contemporary jazz.
