Hugh Auchincloss Steers was an American painter whose figurative work explored the intimate lives and vulnerabilities of the LGBTQ+ community during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s–1990s. A Yale graduate who attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, he became known for canvases that blended dreamlike allegory and realism with expressionist touches, drawing on masters such as Goya, Munch, and Degas. His work employed dense brushwork that emphasized fragile bodies and scenes of care, solitude, or affection between men—baths, shared garments, and embraces—frequently intersected by the theme of illness. Although he lived with HIV, Steers favored allegory over painting from life, turning personal and collective experience into symbolic images. Recognized in his lifetime with fellowships and exhibitions, he showed work in the United States and Italy, and his paintings are included in collections such as the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Walker Art Center. His brief output, curtailed by his death from AIDS-related complications, left an important legacy in the artistic representation of the epidemic and queer intimacy.
