Hugh Bradner was an American physicist affiliated with the University of California, recognized as the creator of the neoprene suit that revolutionized scuba diving and surfing. He graduated from Miami University and earned a doctorate from Caltech. During World War II he worked at the US Naval Ordnance Laboratory and, beginning in 1943, joined the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, contributing to the development of explosives and detonators used in the first nuclear weapons.
After the war he worked in high-energy physics at Berkeley and, prompted by the problems faced by divers in cold water, developed in the 1950s a suit that trapped a thin layer of water warmed by the body and insulated by neoprene. Although his patent was denied and his commercial efforts did not succeed, later research and press accounts hailed him as the "father of the wetsuit."
In 1961 he moved to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, where he became a full professor and combined interests in physics and oceanography, participating in projects such as nuclear tests and the ambitious DUMAND neutrino-astronomy program. His legacy is the practical application of physical knowledge to underwater technology and oceanic research.
