Hugo Blanco Galdós was a Peruvian political leader, prominent peasant organizer and Trotskyist activist known for defending indigenous rights and rural workers. He became a leading figure in agrarian struggles in the early 1960s, directing land occupations and peasant mobilizations that gained relevance during Fernando Belaúnde Terry’s first presidency. His career included leadership of the Provincial Federation of La Convención and editorial direction of the newspaper Lucha Indígena, a publication addressing the demands of Andean peoples. Active from the 1950s, when he affiliated with the Trotskyist movement in Buenos Aires and with the Partido Obrero Revolucionario after returning to Peru, Blanco combined trade‑union and rural militancy with parliamentary activity. He served as a deputy from 1980 to 1985 and sat in the Senate from 1990 until 1992, taking part in national political debates amid intense social conflict. Recognized for his role in peasant mobilizations and for defending indigenous communities, he became a reference for Peru’s twentieth‑century agrarian struggles. He died on 25 June 2023, at the age of 88.
