An Infanta of Spain by birth, María Teresa Antonia Rafaela became Dauphine of France when she married Louis, the Dauphin, son of Louis XV and Maria Leszczyńska. A daughter of Philip V and Elisabeth Farnese, she belonged to a dynamic familial and diplomatic network that sought to restore ties between the Iberian and French courts after previous ruptures. Her proxy wedding in December 1744 and the ceremony at Versailles in February 1745 placed her immediately at the heart of the French court. Known for a solid education, piety and beauty, the young dauphine faced difficulties integrating: shyness, remarks about her red hair and the tension caused by Madame de Pompadour’s presence around the king undermined her ceremonial role. Nonetheless, she maintained good relations with the king and queen and formed an affectionate bond with her husband, who quickly fell in love with her. María Teresa Rafaela’s short life ended tragically in 1746, a few days after giving birth to a daughter who would die two years later. Her death deeply moved the Dauphin and became an episode of profound mourning at court, reflecting both personal fragilities and the complex dynastic ties between Spain and France in the eighteenth century.
