Ivor Novello, born David Ivor Davies, was one of the most popular British artists of the first half of the 20th century, working as a composer, singer, actor and playwright. He emerged on the music scene while still young, gaining prominence with compositions such as "Keep the Home Fires Burning" (1914), a sentimental anthem of the First World War, and with the theatrical success Theodore & Co (1917). After the conflict, he established himself as a writer of numbers for musical comedies and began composing entire scores, often collaborating with lyricist Christopher Hassall and developing a style close to operetta. In the 1920s Novello expanded his career into acting, starring in notable silent films, including two directed by Alfred Hitchcock, and likewise making his mark on the London stage. Although he tried his hand in Hollywood, his greatest recognition came in the United Kingdom, especially for the lavish musical productions of the West End, many of them conceived for the actress Zena Dare. His legacy was formalized with the creation of the Ivor Novello Awards, presented since 1955 to British songwriters and composers.
