John Burdon Sanderson (J.B.S.) Haldane was a British-born biologist and geneticist who later became an Indian citizen, and a central figure in the formation of population genetics and the modern evolutionary synthesis. Author of foundational mathematical work, his series of papers and the book The Causes of Evolution established formulas for changes in gene frequencies and restored natural selection as the central mechanism of evolution. He was a cofounder of the discipline alongside Ronald Fisher and Sewall Wright.

Beyond theoretical genetics, Haldane worked in biochemistry and physiology: he proposed decisive ideas about enzymatic catalysis and studied respiratory and renal functions. During World War II he helped develop diving tables used by navies, and his scientific output included essays on applied science and technoscientific forecasting, as in Daedalus; or, Science and the Future.

Recognized by numerous scientific societies, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and received awards such as the Darwin Medal and the Darwin–Wallace Medal. In 1957 he emigrated to India, adopted Indian citizenship, and lived there until his death in 1964. His legacy combines mathematical rigor, theoretical originality, and a lasting influence on genetics, evolution, and science communication.
