Jackie Stewart, born John Young Stewart, is a former Scottish racing driver who won three Formula 1 World Championships (1969, 1971 and 1973) and is a central figure in motorsport history. Known for precise technique and consistency, he also excelled in endurance and speed events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Indianapolis 500, and competed in the Can-Am series. His F1 career included stints with teams such as BRM, Matra and Tyrrell, where he amassed a large number of wins and set victory records that stood until the second half of the 1980s.

Alongside his sporting success, Stewart was a pioneer in the push for greater safety in racing. After serious accidents, notably at Spa-Francorchamps, he became a leading advocate for technical and driver protection improvements, helping to promote the adoption of full-face helmets and fire-resistant suits. Those efforts helped change Formula 1’s culture around risk.

In the 1990s he founded the Stewart racing team, which had occasional success before being sold to Ford. Off the track, his personal life and his family’s experience with dementia led him to create initiatives focused on research into the disease. His legacy combines sporting excellence with advances in safety and welfare in motorsport.
