James K. Polk was an American lawyer, planter, and politician who rose to national prominence as the 11th President of the United States, serving one term from 1845 to 1849. A member of the Democratic Party and a protégé of Andrew Jackson, he built a solid legislative career: he served multiple terms in the House of Representatives — where he was Speaker and chaired the Ways and Means Committee — and was Governor of Tennessee before becoming president. Polk’s administration is remembered for the territorial expansion of the United States to the Pacific. During his presidency the Republic of Texas was annexed, an agreement was reached with the United Kingdom over the Oregon Territory, and the nation’s southern and western territory was substantially enlarged following the Mexican–American War and the subsequent Mexican cession. On the domestic front, he implemented administrative and fiscal reforms, including tax reductions and the reestablishment of an independent Treasury. His tenure is often judged effective for achieving the main goals he had announced, although it provoked controversy for his conduct of the war with Mexico and for deepening sectional tensions. Polk was also a slaveholder for most of his life, a fact that is part of the context of his legacy.
