Jean-François Champollion was a French philologist and orientalist whose chief achievement was the decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphs, a work that established him as the founder of Egyptology. A linguistic prodigy from youth, he mastered Coptic, Greek, Latin, Hebrew, and Arabic, and early on published studies on demotic script. In 1822 he showed, using the Rosetta Stone and systematic comparisons, that the hieroglyphic system combined phonetic and ideographic signs, paving the way for direct reading of texts from ancient Egypt. His research took place against the backdrop of intense “Egyptomania” in post‑Napoleonic France and within a turbulent political environment that at times hindered his career; nevertheless he maintained connections with influential scientific figures and in 1829 undertook a working trip to Egypt, where he recorded previously unpublished inscriptions. He published foundational works and left a posthumous grammar of ancient Egyptian. Over time he faced criticism regarding the recognition of predecessors’ contributions, but subsequent confirmation of his readings consolidated his reputation. His legacy provides the foundation for the decoding and systematic study of the language and history of ancient Egypt.
