Jean‑Marie Chauvet is the French speleologist who, in 1994, lent his name to the Chauvet‑Pont‑d’Arc cave when it became one of the major prehistoric discoveries. Along with Christian Hillaire and Eliette Brunel‑Deschamps, Chauvet took part in the initial exploration that revealed richly decorated walls and fossil remains, turning the site into an international reference for the study of parietal art.

The significance of the discovery lies in the exceptional preservation and antiquity of the paintings—dated to the Aurignacian, around 30–32 thousand years ago—and in the variety of species depicted, some of them rare in comparable contexts. This helped reshape debates about the symbolic capacities and artistic practices of Upper Pleistocene hunter‑gatherers.

The cave became subject to restricted access to protect the heritage, prompting the creation of replicas and extensive scientific documentation, and inspiring cultural works such as Werner Herzog’s documentary. The find associated with Chauvet secured his recognition within the archaeological and speleological communities, leaving a lasting legacy for the conservation and study of prehistoric art.
