Jean Rosemary Shrimpton is a former British model often cited as the first supermodel and an icon of Swinging London in the 1960s. Discovered by David Bailey after studying at the Lucie Clayton Charm Academy, she became the dominant face of leading fashion magazines — Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle and others — helping to define the mod aesthetic of the decade with her natural look, slim silhouette and restrained expression.

Recognized by Vogue itself as “the model who changed the face of fashion,” Shrimpton moved beyond the editorial circuit to appear on the covers of international weekly publications, establishing a new celebrity status for models and raising their earnings and professional prominence. A notable episode in her career was a promotional visit to Australia in 1965, when her short dress helped spread the miniskirt and provoked widespread cultural reaction.

In addition to runway and editorial work, Shrimpton appeared in films in the 1960s and, after leaving the fashion world, moved to Cornwall, where she ran the Abbey Hotel for decades with her husband, photographer Michael Cox. Her legacy remains an aesthetic and cultural reference for 1960s fashion.
