Jeanne Rosine Toussaint was a Franco-Belgian jeweler who left a decisive mark on the maison Cartier, serving as its artistic director from 1933 to 1970. Born into humble circumstances, she built a career in Paris’s social scene and early on joined the circle of designers and patrons of the period, becoming a friend of Coco Chanel and a central figure in twentieth‑century high jewelry. Under her direction, animal motifs—above all the panther—became emblematic for the house. Toussaint innovated by making settings almost invisible to highlight the stones and by introducing an exuberant bestiary into jewelry: panthers, birds, dragons and orientalist motifs that broadened the iconographic repertoire of luxury jewelry. During the Second World War she managed the Rue de la Paix boutique and took part in discreet efforts to protect collections and clients; after the occupation she created pieces with strong symbolic meaning, such as the "Oiseau libéré." Her work influenced tastes in the following decades and helped define Cartier’s artistic identity within haute couture and the international aristocracy.
